The Knowledge Base is a good source of general information, but if you're have specific questions for specific hardware/software/equipment then ask around in this forum.

I have a question.

I've been making amateur short films for about 2 years now. The only equipment I have is a camcorder, a tripod and Adobe Premiere Elements. I've been planning on getting more equipment for a while, and the first thing I plan on getting is a microphone. My question is this: Should I get a boom mic or a lapel mic?

P.S. I completely agree with you about there not being any good Canadian movies. I'm in London, ON and I can safely say that Canadian film is pretty weak.

Hello, Cheese. If that is your real name.

Lapel mics are really only good for one person at a time. If most of what you shoot involves one person on screen at a time (like news reporting) then it may be a good choice. Wireless lavs are pricey, but lets your talent get far away from the camera without worrying about cable length.

A boom mic on a boom pole is far more flexible. The only drawback is that you need someone to do the thankless job of holding the boom over their head for long periods of time.
When I shoot by myself I lean the boom pole against a chair or another tripod.
Some friends of mine made a nifty boom pole out of a painters pole. They bent some chicken wire into a cylinder, attached that to the end of the pole, threaded some rubber bands through the chicken wire and suspended the mic from them. This is what the pros do to isolate vibrations from the pole.

Yep. Canadian film is lame.
